The Indie film (independent film) industry is a very interesting one. These films feature concepts that are not considered desirable to the mainstream public. This is not to suggest that Indie films are all of poor quality or offensive in nature. In fact some Indie films have come to be known as classics in certain genres. Many people have watched an Indie film and not even realized it. This is possible because well known actors will sometimes take part in an Indie film because they like the artistic concept or perhaps even as a favor to a friend who is making the film.
The Indie film movement began as a way for budding film makers to create a film in their own way, without the confines of major studios. For some film makers, it was also a way to break into the business without having to fight their way through Hollywood. Indie films took the world by storm and have never looked back. In case you are wondering, there are certain things that set indie films apart from major studio productions.
Most Indie films are funded out of pocket by the people making the film, or by outside parties. This makes for less of a “wow” factor in terms of special effects and graphics, but allows the artistic concepts to be front and center. The typical budget of an Indie film is under four million dollars. That might sound like a lot of money, but it isn’t in the world of film production. You have to consider the wages paid to the actors as well as to everyone involved in the making of the film. Then there is paying for set design and construction or renting spaces, costume design, makeup artists and caterers.
Most of the people involved with the making of an Indie film agree to work for less than normal wages. The fact is some directors and writers agree to forego their union wages and work for free or for a percentage of the film’s profits, if there are any. If the project is not well received by its viewing audience, there is the potential for those who worked on the project to receive absolutely no compensation.
No major promotion
Indie film producers do not depend on major studio names for promotion. They also cannot rely on expensive promotional campaigns by advertising agencies.
Many Indie films are entered into film festivals in the hope of drawing some attention. Some Indie films gain an audience at a film festival and will catch the attention of a major distributor and soon the film is being viewed by a wider audience. Some Indie film producers make use of the internet to promote their films.
One of the best things about making an Independent film is the freedom to express ideas and concepts without regulation. Many of the concepts presented in Indie films are controversial and would not be considered acceptable by most major studios. Some of the most popular genres had beginnings as Indie films. “Zombies” for example had their start as Indie films in the 1960s.
The Indie film industry has developed quite a following over the years. What was once considered taboo and “out there” is now eagerly sought after by movie goers and film buffs. The Indie film movement has resulted in a pop culture phenomena. Many famous people attend Indie film festivals as well as participate in the production of the films.
